Providing a healthy environment and meals for your children sometimes seems like a daunting task, but we hope to help with some simple tips and advice.

Eating Better

  • When shopping for groceries make sure that you are not hungry. Being hungry often makes us shop in ways we did not intend.
  • When possible, try to think through your list and meals ahead of time. Planning ahead will help you save money and time.
  • Meals do not have to be elaborate to be nutritious. In general, the more the foods appear in the original form, the better for you. For example, a dinner with a piece of baked meat or fish, broccoli and brown rice is better than a broccoli casserole with added fats and salts.
  • Most of the healthy options are on the outside isles of the grocery store. You may have heard the phrase, “shop the perimeter”. This is because the produce, meats and dairy are usually on the outside isles and the more processed and canned foods are on the inside. Of course, this does not mean that everything on the inside isles is bad for you, but it is a good general rule to follow.

Being More Active

  • If your family makes a habit of being active, then your child is more likely to view physical activity as a normal part of his/her life. In fact, they are more likely to be active most of their life!
  • Take family walks after dinner or on the weekend.
  • There are many parks in our area and many trails around Kennesaw Mountain; go on a hike.
  • If you decide to join a gym and your children are able to participate, go as a family.
  • Fly a kite with your child
